As part of the Tree Week Initiative, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, launched the competition last year with the goals of encouraging creative irrigation solutions, increasing the use of treated water in landscaping and urban beautification projects, and improving water-use efficiency.

According to Al Mubarak, the competition supports national initiatives to increase green space throughout the Kingdom, improve irrigation network efficiency, and provide clever and sustainable water management solutions. In keeping with Bahrain’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2060 as well as national environmental sustainability and climate change targets, it also supports the afforestation plan to double the number of trees by 2035.

The competition offers a chance to create workable and sustainable irrigation systems utilizing treated water, according to Minister of Works Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj. He stated that the selected ideas will be evaluated from a technical, operational, and economic standpoint, as well as their viability and potential for broader application, during the final judging round.

Innovative irrigation solutions at specific locations, such as King Hamad Avenue, Bahrain Bay Avenue, and Sheik Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Avenue, are the focus of the competition’s first category. The second category entails creating an integrated irrigation solution for an area that is not connected to the treated-water network.

Individuals, engineering consultancies, contractors, universities, research centers, and other organizations are welcome to submit entries for the competition, which aims to increase water efficiency and promote initiatives related to urban and agricultural beautification.
