Manama, April 30 (BNA): As part of its ongoing efforts to guarantee business compliance with VAT and excise, the National Bureau for Revenue (NBR) carried out 330 inspection inspections during the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, these visits are intended to prevent VAT and excise evasion, maintain market monitoring, and guarantee strong consumer rights protection.
NBR reports 86 violations during 330 market inspections in Q1 of 2026 to ensure commercial compliance
The NBR verified that efficient market supervision led to the notification of 86 VAT infractions, for which legal administrative fines were levied. Along with other infractions like failing to display a VAT certificate in a public location and failing to disclose pricing inclusive of VAT, the most commonly reported infraction was not adhering to the requirements for producing VAT invoices.
As a result of the NBR’s increased oversight efforts, suspicious cases of VAT and excise evasion were found, and violators were prosecuted. Those found guilty of evasion crimes could face five years in prison and a fine equal to three times the amount of VAT owed, or a year in prison and a fine equal to twice the amount of evaded excise.
The NBR emphasized how crucial it is to follow all rules and laws in order to guarantee the efficient application of VAT and excise. Additionally, the NBR encourages all parties involved to report any infractions by using the National Suggestions & Complaints System (Tawasul) or calling the NBR call center at 80008001, which is open around-the-clock. Further details can be found on the NBR’s website, www.nbr.gov.bh.
