Manama, Aug. 12 (BNA): The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) has declared that fishing kingfish (Chan’ad) with nets in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s territorial seas will be prohibited from August 15 to October 15, 2026. As part of continuous efforts to protect marine resources and guaranty the sustainability of the maritime environment, line fishing will continue to be allowed during the two-month period.
Two-month ban on kingfish net fishing announced
The SCE confirmed that Bahrain’s commitment to preserving marine populations, guaranteeing their sustainability in its territorial seas, and protecting the species throughout their spawning and reproduction period is reflected in the prohibition against using nets to harvest kingfish. Consequently, this helps to keep them available in local markets throughout the fishing season.
Additionally, the SCE emphasized how crucial it is for fishermen to abide by the prohibition, pointing out that any unlawful kingfish fishing during this time will result in legal action.
According to the SCE, fishermen who discover kingfish or other impacted marine species entangled in their gear during the prohibited time are required to promptly return them to the sea, taking the appropriate precautions to guaranty their safe release.
