Manama, April 16 (BNA): The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) declared the end of its investigations into a detainee’s death and referred the detained accused to a criminal trial on a charge of assault resulting in death.

The Unit learned of the detainee’s death on March 27 through social media reports and a notification from the National Intelligence Agency’s Inspector General that same day. The notification stated that the deceased had been detained by the Agency and had been assaulted by one of its employees, resulting in multiple injuries. After being taken to the hospital, he passed away from his wounds.
In response, the Unit launched an investigation right once to determine all the circumstances surrounding the occurrence in compliance with its legal authority and the authorities granted to it. To ascertain the type of injuries and the cause of death, the Unit hired a forensic physician. Additionally, it detailed the steps taken in relation to the deceased from the moment of his arrest, proving that he and others had been detained in accordance with a valid arrest warrant.
The Unit inspected the scene, collected pertinent medical data, documents, and visual recordings, and directed the Judicial Police to step up their investigation. It also questioned the accused, who acknowledged the activities attributed to him, and heard the testimonies of the deceased’s father and the incident witnesses.
The Unit ordered the accused’s referral to the High Criminal Court while he was in jail due to the investigation’s conclusive evidence that he had committed the crime.
By using all of its legal authorities to protect the rule of law, guarantee its enforcement, and safeguard human rights—especially those of accused people and detainees—the SIU reaffirmed its complete dedication to fulfilling its mandate. In its quest for justice, the Unit also reiterated how serious it is about holding those who violate the rights protected by the Constitution and the law accountable.
