Manama, Feb. 23 (BNA): Ministerial Decision (7) of 2026, which prohibits the production, importation, and distribution of single-use plastic bags thinner than 57 microns, will contribute to the reduction of plastic waste, according to Amna Hamad Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE). The action backs the National Waste Management Strategy and Law (7) of 2022 on the environment.
SCE Chief Executive: Thin plastic bag ban boosts circular economy and protects natural resources
Al Rumaihi went on to say that plastic bags will become reusable if their minimum thickness is increased from 35 to 57 microns. This will boost the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts to strengthen the circular economy by improving waste management and lowering the cost of recycling. The decision is also in line with the United Nations Environment Programme and is a component of Bahrain’s progressive strategy, which has been in place since 2019, to minimize plastic pollution while striking a balance between environmental preservation and business effect.
She advised people to separate their plastic debris and bring it to recycling facilities. This will reduce pollution, preserve natural resources, and promote long-term sustainability, she said.
