Manama, Feb. 14 (BNA) – February 14 is a significant day in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s overall development process as it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the National Action Charter. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s goals of promoting institutional and legislative change, enhancing justice and openness, safeguarding liberties and rights, and upholding Bahrain’s Arab and Islamic identity were all represented in the Charter.

National Action Charter: 25 years of comprehensive development

After His Majesty’s ascension in 1999, the Charter, which was approved by 98.4% of voters in a public referendum on February 14, 2001, signaled the beginning of a comprehensive reform process. It created a contemporary framework for government founded on democratic progress, the rule of law, and institutions.

A bicameral parliamentary structure consisting of the Council of Representatives and the Shura Council was established as a result of the Charter, strengthening the division of powers and encouraging public participation. In 2001, a committee was established to examine and revise laws to guarantee that their tenets are upheld and to protect liberties and rights.

Additionally, it established the framework for social and economic transformation, such as Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, which supports advancements in housing, technology, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and the environment. By putting the citizen at the center of development, the Charter improved economic diversity, investment opportunities, and sustainable growth.

The Charter prioritized the empowerment of women and young people while advancing tolerance, coexistence, and legal guarantees for freedom of belief and opinion. One of its main results was the creation of the Supreme Council for Women.

After 25 years, Bahrain’s contemporary state and ongoing development are still based on the National Action Charter.
