Nov. 26, Manama (BNA): Al Ezzel Power Company, one of Bahrain’s independent power producers that has run the 950 megawatt Al Ezzel Power Plant since 2004, and Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), signed an agreement to extend the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
EWA, Al Ezzel Power sign agreement for long-term PPA extension
The facility will continue to operate after the present contract expires in April 2027 thanks to the new extension, which runs for ten and a half years, from May 2027 to the end of October 2037.
In order to satisfy the demands of economic and urban development while guaranteeing the sustainability of electricity and water services, the President of EWA emphasized that the Authority is still carrying out its strategic objectives to modernize Bahrain’s electrical system and improve its operational efficiency. In order to ensure supply continuity and satisfy the rising demand for energy, he emphasized the significance of fortifying alliances with independent power providers.
According to him, the extension is in line with EWA’s strategic goals to improve the national power network’s efficiency. The new agreement makes it possible to make the most use of the current generation capacity, which enhances cost effectiveness and ensures a steady supply of electricity.
He added that Bahrain’s sustainability objectives and its pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2060 are supported by the Al Ezzel plant, which was built through a public-private partnership under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and runs using a combined-cycle system that boosts natural gas efficiency and lowers carbon emissions.
The EWA President stated that the agreement extension reflects ongoing advancements in effective resource management and long-term sustainability, strengthening Bahrain’s electricity infrastructure readiness and improving the authority’s capacity to meet growing electricity demand driven by economic and urban growth.
