Manama, April 5 (BNA): Following a high-level UN Security Council meeting on cooperation between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the UN, which was presided over by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and had as its agenda item “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organisations in maintaining international peace and security,” the Council adopted the following Presidential Statement:

The Security Council President’s statement

The Security Council reiterates that preserving world peace and security is its main duty.

In line with Chapter VIII of the UN Charter, the Security Council remembers all of its prior resolutions and presidential declarations emphasizing the significance of creating strong alliances between the UN and regional and subregional organizations.

The Security Council thanks the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Albudaiwi, and Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace operations, Khaled Khiari, for their briefings on April 2, 2026, highlighting the crucial role of regional organizations in addressing issues of international peace and security.

Through mediation, preventive diplomacy, technical and financial support, and humanitarian engagement in support of prevention across the peace continuum, the Gulf Cooperation Council contributes to regional and global stability. The Security Council acknowledges the Gulf Cooperation Council’s position and expertise in understanding and promoting regional sustainable peace and security.

The Security Council highlights the significance of enhancing institutional cooperation between the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council, including through regular communication, coordination mechanisms, and information sharing in areas like conflict prevention, mediation, peacebuilding, counterterrorism, and humanitarian response. It also welcomes the consultations between the Secretariats of the UN and the GCC.

The Security Council remembers its earlier pertinent resolutions, which acknowledge the Gulf region’s critical role in maintaining global economic stability as well as its significance to global peace and security.

The Security Council emphasizes how important GCC members are to the UN’s humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts.

In order to foster stronger cooperation and strategic coordination with the United Nations, especially in tackling new threats and challenges to peace and security in the region, the Security Council encourages the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council to convene regular briefings.

In accordance with resolutions 1325 (2000) and 2250 (2015), the Security Council supports cooperative efforts by the UN and the GCC to advance the full, equal, and significant engagement of women and youth in advancing peace and security.

In order to solve common issues including marine security, preventing and combating terrorism, and addressing food and water security, the Security Council promotes cooperation between the UN and the GCC.

In accordance with the tenets of the UN Charter and international law, the Security Council reiterates its steadfast support to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states.

The Security Council asks the Secretary-General to include suggestions to improve institutional ties and collaboration between the UN and the Gulf Cooperation Council in his upcoming report to the Security Council and the General Assembly on cooperation between the UN and regional and other organizations.
